Duster is an album by vibraphonist Gary Burton that was recorded in 1967 and released by RCA. Duster is considered one of the first jazz fusion albums. Although it received mixed responses from critics, it peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums. Although Burton's basic sound had not changed during from the previous year, his openness toward other styles made his Quartet one of the most significant jazz groups of the period. Burton has composed for and played with a variety of well-known jazz musicians, including Carla Bley, Gato Barbieri, Jimmy Knepper, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Steve Lacy, Pat Metheny, Howard Johnson, Michael Mantler, Makoto Ozone, Adam Nussbau read more. I first became familiar with this favorite era of Burton's through an excellent French RCA boxset that I purchased eons ago from the old Rounder Mail-Order service. It contained the three quartet albums with Larry Coryell, 'DUSTER,' 'LOFTY FAKE ANAGRAM' and 'LIVE. Very good jazz from 1967. Liked it from my first listen and still love the sound and the atmosphere. The musicians blend good and the music sounds fresh and innovative. Made me explore Larry Coryell's records. I think he was best from around this period to the mid 70's.
