Entertainment is the debut album by English post-punk band Gang of Four. It was released in September 1979 through EMI internationally and Warner Bros. Records in North America. Stylistically, it draws heavily on punk rock but also incorporates the influence of funk, dance music, reggae and dub. Its lyrics and artwork reflected the band's left-wing political concerns. It would be an influential release in the burgeoning post-punk movement. Entertainment by Gang of Four is a seminal post-punkexperimental album recorded in 1979 that drew inspiration from punk, dub, and Marxist ideology. Some listeners may find themselves engaging in metered body movement i. Others, however, may become plagued by self-loathing due to their lack of political involvement and wasted youth. And a third group of listeners will face facial paralysis as they are unable to decipher whether or not they should be laughing or crying or dancing. From groups whose awareness of genealogy spreads wide enough to openly acknowledge Gang of Four's influence Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine, to those not in touch with their ancestry enough to realize it rap-metal, some indie rock - all have appropriated elements of their forefathers' trailblazing contribution. Their funk was no less stark or forbidding than, say, the more astringent Timbaland productions. They certainly weren't as twitchy, speedy, or noisy as James Brown at his most energized. They had attitude, energy, the big beat, skilled players funneling their virtuosity into the necessary notes, a handy way with a catch phrase, and sweaty live performances. Sounds like pop to me. They formed in 1977 as part of a scene surrounding Leeds University's fine arts department that also included the Mekons and the Au Pairs. As a so-called post-punk record, it exhibits a tendency in bands from their time to take the then nascent punk rock style and experiment with its manifestations. This is definitely not a typical punk record in the sense of The Ramones' quick pop riffing or The Velvet Underground's too-cool to care attitude Gang of Four's particular twist on the punk sound featured here used generally quick tempos as usual, but a different rhythmic attack with angular, sharp chords that stabbed into the music with staccato accents.
