1 - 8 recorded 1974 in 4 days at Kaleidophon Studios London. All the pieces were improvised, some completely and some to a roughly preconceived idea. No overdubs were used, the music is heard at is was played except for No Birds, which was made in two parts, and Not Forgotten, from which we removed two notes. The only sounds not produced 'naturally' by guitar or prepared guitar area those of the fuzz-box used on track A4, B3 and B4, and echo delay used on track B4. The extraneous noises on Heat c/w Moment are those made by my breath and feet while I was playing. The middle part of No Birds was played on two guitars simultaneously. [Originally released as Guitar Solos.]
9 and 10 recorded at Newman's barge (Argonaut Studio) in 1976 and originally released as part of Guitar Solos 2.
11, 12 and 13 recorded October 1978 at Briollay, France with the help of Jean-Paul Bossard and his Revox tape machine, "Song Of River Nights" was performed on one guitar by three people - thanks to Isabelle and Eude Bulard for cotton reel assistance. Originally released as part of Guitar Solos 3.
14 - 18 recorded at Noise New York, September 1988. [Previously unreleased.]

As far as I know this is his only solo guitar album - there should be more . Guitar Solos is the debut solo album of English guitarist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith. It was recorded while Frith was still a member of the English experimental rock group Henry Cow and was released in the United Kingdom on LP record by Caroline Records in October 1974. The album comprises eight tracks of unaccompanied and improvised music played on prepared guitars by Frith without any overdubbing. Although it was originally recorded in 1974, there are pieces on Fred Frith's landmark Guitar Solos album that are probably still making guitar players scratch their heads wondering How did he do that Don't expect any kind of Yngwie Malmsteen-style wankage Frith instead uses a volume pedal, tapping, and other extended techniques to produce everything from chiming, bell-like notes to unearthly howls. I thought this was supposed to be an album of guitar solos Instead its just a bunch of racket : If you want to hear some shredding guitar solos you should buy some Winger or a Warrant album. They actually have guitar on them Read more. Fred Frith plays some of the most abstract and yet emotionally engaging melody free music on this cd that I have heard. He is able to create mood and atmosphere without employing the usual musical structures heard in not scientifically tested of music that is out there at the moment.
