His mother, Poliksena nÃe Nowicka, died several months after Paderewski was born, and he was brought up by his distant relatives. From his early childhood, Paderewski was interested in music while living at the private estate near Zhytomyr where he moved with his father. However soon after his father's arrest in connection with the January Uprising 1863, he was adopted by his aunt. He soon gained great popularity and his subsequent appearances in Paris in 1889, and in London in 1890 were major successes. Minus the myriad orchestra colorings, Goulds spirited playing makes you listen anew to the music. Textures, inner voices and the grand structure of the piece emerge excitingly. Yet you also relish the performance as a sheer act of pianistic virtuosity. Its just as revealing to compare a few outstanding recent recordings of piano transcriptions with the original versions. This is a piece he has loved since childhood, he explains in the liner notes, and his affection comes through in every moment
