"Ikoyi Blindness" was originally released in 1976 and is credited to Fela Anikulapo Kuti & Afrika 70. The cover still shows Fela's old name, Ransome, but it's Xed out and replaced by Anikulapo. On the reproduced back cover it reads, "Ransome is a slave name—that is why it's dying a natural death."

The album was a smash hit and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Fela Kuti's political statements could be heard throughout Africa. Kuti's open vocalization of the violent and oppressive regime controlling Nigeria did not come without consequence.
