Felix Mendelssohn composed his Piano Quartet No. 2 in F minor, Op. 2, and his Piano Quartet No. 3 in B minor, Op. 3, between the ages of 14 and 15. This album by the Fauré quartet is a fine addition to the catalog, and the recording by Deutsche Grammophon gives it more prominence than smaller labels can muster for the smattering of other recordings. The group plays with a bright sound and lively, energetic exchanges, and the piano and the three strings are evenly balanced throughout. Some listeners expecting profundity in these pieces will be disappointed, but there is ample elegance and charm to make up for any perceived lack of emotional depth. For me, the Henschel Quartet represents the high water mark for the Mendelssohn string quartets, where this amazing music meets its match in terms of sheer performance talent and engineering quality.
