Mama's Gun is the second studio album by American singer Erykah Badu. It was recorded between 1999 and 2000 at Electric Lady Studios in New York and released on November 21, 2000, by Motown Records. A neo soul album, Mama's Gun incorporates elements of funk, soul, and jazz styles. It has confessional lyrics by Badu, which cover themes of insecurity, personal relationships, and social issues. The album has been viewed by critics as a female companion to neo soul artist D'Angelo's second album Voodoo. Erykah Badu's second album is dense with ideas and sounds that draw from the past and look toward the future. Released in November 2000, it embodies the millennial tensions of that pivotal year. From the moment Princes party ran out of time and the ball dropped in Times Square to signal a new millennium, people were waiting. Since the arrival of Erykah Badu onto the neo-soul scene back in 1997 with Baduizm, commercial music stood up and took notice with an onslaught of similar artists reaching comparable peaks of mainstream success. After taking some time off for introspection and to raise her son, Badu returned with Mama's Gun, which is a turning point for her in many ways. Gone are the cryptic Baduizms that glossed all over her first release, replaced with a more honestly raw Badu singing directly from her heart rather than her head. Mama's Gun is the third album for this talented singersongwriter from Dallas, and features the hit single Bag Lady. Includes: - Penitentiary Philosophy - Didn't Cha Know - My Life -. Erykah Badus sophomore album was not so much a departure from its predecessor, Baduizm a smooth, soulful 70s informed record, but more of a refinement. Her ruminations on young black men affected by injustice Other Side Of The Game continue on this album A. 2000 As well as her aversion to over materialistic people Bag Lady so if youre looking to escape her infamous Baduizms you wont be in luck. New elements are introduced however. Mamas Gun finds Erykah disrobing emotionally, shedding the self-righteousness and goddess posture that marked Baduizm. The new Erykah isnt teaching, shes dealing with regular-person baggage. On Cleva, a light, airy song about finding peace with your shortcomings, she lists a slew of faults, including her lack of natural hair: My hair aint never hung down to my shouldersAnd it might not growYou never know. Where Baduizm was often as decipherable as hieroglyphics, the lyrics on Mamas Gun are clearer, though no less profound: Bring me water for these flowers growing out my mind, she. But it was her 2000 sophomore studio album, Mamas Gun-creatively restless, stylistically adventurous, lyrically direct-that made us stay in love. The screaming live-band funk of opener Penitentiary Philosophy tells you right away you shouldnt settle in expecting a rehash of her debuts smooth R&B. As a grown woman, I probably shouldn't still have posters on my bedroom wall but I make an exception for Erykah Badu. The reason why is simple: Mama's Gun. For me, though, there will only ever be one Erykah album that matters. On Mama's Gun Badu represented the woman I wanted to be a woman with something to say who could be weird and funny and clever and sexy at the same time. I still remember watching the video to the first release from it, Bag Lady. I was at a friend's house where I would go to tape hours of MTV on to VHS. Mama's Gun. New Amerykah Part One 4th World War.
