The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale is a collaborative studio album featuring Eric Clapton and a host of other musicians. It consists of covers of songs by J. Cale, who had died the previous year. It was named after Cale's 1972 single Call Me the Breeze. It was produced by Clapton and Simon Climie. The guests invited on the album include Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, Willie Nelson and Albert Lee. Clapton repaid his debt to Cale once with their 2006 collaboration, The Road to Escondido, and he takes that idea a step further with this tribute album, conceived at Cales funeral last year. Claptons renditions can be a little too faithful: He nails Cales throaty growl on Cajun Moon, but the track fades out just as it might have opened up into a Dead-style jam Lies, sung with John Mayer, could have benefited from the charismatic delivery of a vet like Dr. John or Leon Russell. The best moments break free from the restraints of Cales writing. Cales influence on Clapton and many of todays artists cannot be overstated. Great to have an Appreciation of JJ Cale by Eric Clapton and his friends. All artists succeeded very well to approach the JJ style and it's amazing how close they can sound like the real JJ. It's also nice to have the original recordings of JJ Cale as comparison , but its fair to say, these originals sound better then the Eric Clapton recordings.
