A Box of Their Best is the first US box set by Electric Light Orchestra ELO, released in 1980. It consisted of the albums A New World Record with the sides reversed, Out of the Blue and Discovery. Also included was Jeff Lynne's first ever solo single, Doin' That Crazy Thing. This single, a one-sided single that was marked as a promo, was not in all releases of the box. The box set is almost identical to the UK release Four Light Years, released the same year. All songs written by Jeff Lynne. Lynne was still a member of The Move, alongside Roy Wood and future ELO drummer Bev Bevan, when he wrote the very first ELO song, 10538 Overture. With Wood playing a cheap Chinese cello, multi-tracked by Lynne, the song sounded to Woods ears like a monster heavy metal orchestra. 10538 Overture became the new groups mission statement, the opening fanfare on a debut album described by Melody Maker as a gas. Face The Music, their fifth album, reached the Top 10 in the US, but in the UK, like the groups previous two albums, it didnt even chart. It did, however, produce a UK hit single, albeit belatedly.
