"After the huge success of our debut album 'Sunrise In Eden' we didn't want to waste to much time to what would become the its follower 'Arcana'. The time from the recordings of 'Sunrise' (mid 99) till its release (Autumn 2000) gave me plenty of time for songwriting. All in all I wrote 17 songs and 12 ended up on 'Arcana'. 'Thin red line' and 'The Silent Wake' remained in the drawer for a later use, while there were 3 songs that were not as good as the others so they were thrown into infinity. The titles of those songs were 'Oceans of Time', 'Heaven's Calling' (which at least made it into rehearsal room) and 'Malice in Wonderland'.
It was a very creative time and completely stressless. Georg Edelmann was replaced by Andreas Eibler on guitar and so we spent the first half of 2001 to rehearse the new songs to prepare them for the studio to record.
We entered the House of Audio Studios in Karlsdorf (Germany) on July 3, 2001. Drums were recorded from July 4 to 7, while everything else was recorded parallelly from July 9 till 25. This process was more relaxing for Andy, Kurt, Sabine and myself, so none of us had to record all day through. It was a hot summer and so we enjoyed many evenings on the porch and had some nice barbecues. Angra were there at the same time to record their comeback album 'Rebirth' and so we shared the apartment with them. The mix was done again by Dennis Ward and started at the end of August.
'Arcana' got overwhelming reviews and was released on November 26, 2001. The album was followed by a European tour with Metalium in May 2002 and our first appearance in Asia, co-headlining the International Busan Rock Festival in front of 20,000 people and had a great club show in Seoul with Sinergy . Sadly the Korean tour was Kurt's last one as he decided to leave the band due to his profession."
- Lanvall, Spring 2013
Track commentary by Lanvall:
1. Ascending - "A nice and short orchestral intro for the album, inspired by my favorite composer Anton Bruckner, starting with the tremolo strings. The sample technology of course was lightyears away from the one today."
2. Starlight Reverie - "A melodic speed metal song had to open the album back at that time and 'Starlight Reverie' was the perfect one. As it was also the song on all the magazine samplers it was a very popular one among our fans. Listening to the song again after some years, it was a nice chord progression and melody in the chorus and I especially love the bridge after the guitar solo."
3. The Palace - " 'The Palace' is inspired by the great German fantasy movie 'The Neverending Story' and has an interesting song structure. The great piano/vocal midpart still sends shivers down my spine. The whole song is full of so called slash chords. Those are chords with a different bass note, mostly the third. The soaring Vocal melody in the chorus progresses over a G#m chord with a descending bass line while the second guitar solo part ascends over a constant C bass note. There's a nice modulation change between the first and second solo from E to Cm."
4. A Moment of Time - "This song was the first out of many inspired by an episode out of the phenomenal Star Trek universe, in this case Voyager. It's a very unusual ballad as it comes with a lot of modulations and changes. I like the atmospheric change from verse 1 with acoustic guitars to verse 2 where it goes into piano and strings. The chorus still stood the test of time too."
5. Fly On A Rainbow Dream - "A through and through positive song, that reflects the spirit of the whole album. As Andi joined the band as second guitar player I worked out a lot of double solos from that point upon. I still love the unexpected B-chorus section with just Sabine singing over a synth pad 'Fly, fly, fly' and then ending up in minor instead of major."
6. Color My Sky - "This song was maybe no the most popular one, I cannot remember if we ever played it live, but I recognize some interesting songwriting techniques in it. The last chorus goes a half step down after the soft part which is a cool and unexpected method. Listening to it again I like the guitar riffs in the verse and the nice vocal melodies over it."
7. Velvet Eyes of Dawn - "This was the bonus track on the European digipack edition as it was a quite different song with a great atmosphere."
8. The Whisper of the Ages - "This was the Japanese bonus track. The sitar intro originally was a separate song called 'Twilight Horizon' buy then I decided to put it together to one. What is sticking out musically for me after so many years, is the first riff in unison with the sitar, which creates a real cool effect. Then the modulation change from the verse into the pre-chorus which is going from Em to a Cmaj7b5 chord, which creates a unique atmosphere and the great double sweeping arpeggios in the second half of the guitar solo, not to forget the nice hooks in the chorus of course. Maybe too bad, that it was just a bonus track..."
9. Into The Light - "This is still one of my favorites on the album. The great main riff is a bit in the vein of Valentine's 'Megaman' while the keyboard solo section might remember you of some Royal Hunt stuff. I love the change then when it goes into the fast 16th notes riff and the beautiful vocal melody in the end part. It's a great melting of styles and the Asian sounds perfectly fit to the feel of the song."
10. Suspiria - "The second speed song, which was also a live smasher. I remember a show in South Korea where people totally freaked out. Lyrically it was also inspired by the equally named Star Trek Voyager episode. Musically the end section is sticking out for me, where the bass line is going down over a stead B chord progression. Still love the song."
11. Winter Winds - "Also one of my favorites. Beautiful chorus, beautiful guitar solo, great bridge and chord progression in the end part. Nice to have still goosebumps while listening again after several years."
12. Arcana - "The heart track of the album with the most beautiful vocal melodies and chord progressions of the whole album. I think it is one of the absolute Edenbridge classics!"
