The invitation came after Jackie Kennedy, a guest of the intimate party and on one of her first social outings following the tragic death of her late husband, expressed her wish to see the rising duo perform in the flesh at the event. John's Gris-Gris is among the most enduring recordings of the psychedelic era it sounds as mysterious and spooky in the 21st century as it did in 1968. It is the album where Mac Rebennack established a stage identity that has served him well. Almost everyone played percussion. Gris-Gris sounds like a post-midnight ceremony recorded in the bayou swamp instead of L. s Gold Star Studio where Phil Spector cut hits. The atmosphere is thick, smoky, serpentine, foreboding. Rebennack inhabits his character fully, delivering Creole French and slang English effortlessly in the grain of his half-spoken, half-sung voice. The sleevenotes match Gris Gris music for swampy mysticism, bordering on impenetrability to those not versed in Crescent City lore. Dr John. To you whom I may communicate with shortly through the smoke of Deaux-Deaux the rattlesnake whose forked tongue hisses pig Latin in silk and satin da-zaw-ig-day, may the gilded splinters of Auntie Andre spew forth in your path to light and guide your way through the bayous of life. For prime poetic mumbo-jumbo, look no further than the back cover text of Dr Johns debut LP Gris-Gris 1968. Of course the music is beyond stoned magnificence . Gris gris is the New Orleans term for voodoo, and one could be forgiven for thinking this album was recorded in the dead of night in one of the city s famed graveyards. Well, it was recorded in the dead of night at Los Angeles famed Gold Star Studios, where Phil Spector recorded many of his classics. John the Night Tripper, he of the feathered headdresses and name taken from an 1840s New Orleans root doctor. The result was probably the spookiest and most hypnotic album ever made voodoo psychedelia is about as close as you can come, but doesn t quite capture the otherworldly vibe. John The Night Trippers Gris-Gris is an album that needs to be experienced. The second track doesn't even contain any vocals from The Night Tripper and instead sets the mood over violin strings chanting and rhythmic drumbeat. After the introduction of Gris-Gris Gumbo, Danse Kalinda Ba Doom makes it clear this is no ordinary audio outing. Mama Roux takes the topics of Medicine Men and 2nd lines but lays it over a funky beat that grooves and wouldn't have been out of place in a disco at the time.
