Some Cities is the third studio album by the British indie rock band Doves. The album was released by Heavenly Records on 21 February 2005, and became the band's second consecutive album to top the UK Albums Chart at number 1. Some Cities was conceived as a rawer, stripped-down record, and conceptually touches upon the physical changes of the band's hometown of Manchester, as well as emotional transformations. The album features the band's second-highest charting single, Black and White Town, which. Opener Some Cities is urgent and yearning. The song is surprisingly tactful in forging a composite order, wedding Bruce Springsteen's arena boot-stomp to the Velvet Underground's driveling, soot-caked guitar yowls. Almost Forgot Myself is more classic Motown than its rippling atmospherics and surf-echo guitar let on, laying down a rubbery bass line and sturdy boom-chick drumming. It's frustrating when an album feels like it consciously has to embark on some kind of journey- for instance, the descent from energetic, single-worthy material to slow introspective ballads that's so often just a cover for frontloading. Some Cities percolates with more of a hopeful but grounded spirit, an English spirit. The band's native Manchester comes into view. Shades of ash and cinder surround Doves' guitar flow, but without melancholy. The album's title track captures that with vocalistguitarist Jimi Goodwin's earnest plea, Some cities crushSome cities healSome cities laughWhile other cities stealCan't I make you see . Pop Rock. Some Cities is Doves' third album. It was released February 21, 2005, on Heavenly Records. Most of it was recorded in a farmhouse in Chesire, England, except for the final song, Ambition, which was recorded in a Benedictine monastery in Scotland. Theres a lot of subject matter on that album dealing with change. Buildings get ripped down and replaced by more generic ones. It kind of gave ourselves a bit of purpose to write about it. We also listened to a lot of
