The album was released by Heavenly Records on 21 February 2005, and became the band's second consecutive album to top the UK Albums Chart at number 1. Almost Forgot Myself is more classic Motown than its rippling atmospherics and surf-echo guitar let on, laying down a rubbery bass line and sturdy boom-chick drumming. It's frustrating when an album feels like it consciously has to embark on some kind of journey- for instance, the descent from energetic, single-worthy material to slow introspective ballads that's so often just a cover for frontloading. Most of it was recorded in a farmhouse in Chesire, England, except for the final song, Ambition, which was recorded in a Benedictine monastery in Scotland. Theres a lot of subject matter on that album dealing with change. Buildings get ripped down and replaced by more generic ones. It kind of gave ourselves a bit of purpose to write about it. We also listened to a lot of
