This EP featuring the dixieland jazz outfit the Dixie Cats is one of the rarer examples of the output of the now collectable label, Avenue Recordings Ltd of Chingford in London. All the tracks on this EP are very nicely played and very nicely recorded and reproduced indeed. Dixieland, sometimes referred to as hot jazz or traditional jazz, is a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. One of the first uses of the term Dixieland with reference to music was in the name of the Original Dixieland Jass Band which shortly thereafter changed the spelling of its name to Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Their 1917 recordings fostered popular awareness of this new style of music. Dixiecats' featuring the Dixieland All Stars showcases the Dixieland style that took its origins from the New Orleans idiom. Dixieland music had for a while been considered a white man's music imitating the black New Orleans style. Here we have a predominantly black band featuring such legends as Henry Allen, Willie 'The Lion' Smith, and drummer Zutty Singleton who had been born in New Orleans in 1898 and played with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton .
