The three Heckstall-Smith cuts are much in the jazz-blues-rock spirit of Colosseum, a natural enough development considering that saxophonist Heckstall-Smith and guitarist James Litherland had been in the first lineup of Colosseum. The playing is of an excellent virtuosic standard, and the energy level is high, and indeed a little frenetic. But it's a little on the busy and blustery side, and flawed chiefly by the ill that affects much music of this sort from the period - the songs aren't nearly as good as the musicianship. A Whiter Shade of Pale is the debut single by the British rock band Procol Harum, released 12 May 1967. The single reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart on 8 June 1967 and stayed there for six weeks. Without much promotion, it reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. One of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love, it is one of the best selling singles in history, having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Heckstall-Smith was born Richard Malden Heckstall-Smith in Ludlow, England his father then being headmaster of the local Grammar School, and brought up in Knighton, Wales. He learned to play piano, clarinet and alto saxophone in childhood. After refusing a second term at a York boarding school, he went to Gordonstoun, where his schoolmaster father, Hugh, had taken a job. He participated in a 1990s reunion of the original Colosseum lineup and played the hard-working Hamburg Blues Band. In 2001 he cut the all-star project Blues and Beyond, which reunited him with Mayall, Bruce, Taylor and ex-Mayall and Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green.
