Dexter Gordon's set at the 1970 Montreux Jazz Festival is typically exciting with long tenor solos, fine backup from pianist Junior Mance, bassist Martin Rivera and drummer Oliver Jackson and a well-rounded repertoire: Gordon's Fried Bananas, Sophisticated Lady, Thelonious Monk's Rhythm-A-Ning, an explorative Body and Soul, Blue Monk and The Panther. Although a concert performance the audience in no way impedes the music and hopefully encouraged all four musicians because all play their socks off. Gordon was in his late forties and playing with great stamina and enthusiasm and maturity, which was matched by pianist Junior Mance. I am a great fan of Junior Mance, but to my ear it is Dexter Gordon who steals the limelight. Released: Jul 1970. Latest albums by Dexter Gordon. Sound Carrier
