I must admit that I have never heard any Developer albums before. I have however heard some random, single tracks and was not impressed to say the least. Despite my initial reaction to his music, I got this double album out of sheer curiosity – mostly because I trust Phage Tapes. Now, I can’t ephasize enough how surprised I actually was when I listened to this album for the first time. To be honest, I expected mediocrity with some interesting things going on here and there but this album is actually really good.

First of all, I have to say that – as usual in case of Phage Tapes – the packaging is excellent. It’s an old-school, double cassette box with an abstract, hand-drawn artwork and an insert card. Inside, there are two C20 tapes filled with raw and intense sounds. Developer sounds very American - what I mean is that there is not much filtering and modulation going on. All of the tracks are based on a heavy, crunchy, rusty, distorted textures and some field recordings thrown into the mix for good measure.

What I particularly enjoy about this album is the fact that the tracks are not as fast as a hooker on meth, zapping through Johns for a quick buck. Developer takes things slowly, flipping mute switches often enough to maintain a decent pace and yet to allow you to focus on each particular texture. This is a really nice change from the usual lightspeed, ninja cuts which some of the other artists utilize on their records.

PT:188 is an intense, gripping and raw album which will not disappoint cut-up fanatics. Pick it up and you won’t be disappointed. I am off to Discogs to get some of his other tapes.
