Album

A Crow Looked at Me is the eighth studio album by Mount Eerie, a solo project by American musician Phil Elverum. It was released on March 24, 2017, on Elverum's own label, P. Elverum & Sun. It is a concept album about the death of Elverum's wife, the Canadian cartoonist and musician Geneviève Castrée. The album was written and produced entirely by Elverum, who recorded it, using mostly Castrée's instruments and notes he had compiled about Castrée, in the room in which she died. A Crow Looked at Me, Elverums ninth album as Mount Eerie-and 13th overall, counting his earlier music as the Microphones-mentions Geneviève in nearly every song, sometimes by name, sometimes through cold, negative space. Its almost as though Elverum has nothing better to talk about. Which, of course, he probably doesnt. Elverums recent albums-2015s Sauna, 2012s double feature of Clear Moon and Ocean Roar-were heavy on ambiance and fuzz, sonic embodiments of things through which we cant see. Crow is spare and clean, mostly voice and some guitar, the sound of coffee in winter. However, this is exactly what he doesn't do on A Crow Looked at Me. Arriving less than a year after her death from stage-four pancreatic cancer in July 2016, the album is an instinctive, reflexive reaction to the fact that the woman he loved and the mother of his child is dead. Elverum doesn't aspire to teach anyone else about death or love or coping. But A Crow Looked At Me isnt like any of those other albums. It isnt like any other albums, and like Elverum has said, it only barely qualifies as music. Its not an album about finding closure or communing with spirits or understanding anything. On A Crow, theres a moment where Elverum sings about the moment when he was at his most antisocial, when he said fuck the world in a finally satisfying way and went off to live in a remote Arctic Norwegian cabin. Then he got a letter from Castrée and went back to start a life with her. They were together for 13 years, and we know all this because he tells us, in plain language, through song. Death takes on a different menace when it's approaching shape in the low light, when it's love felled by disease, when it's a partner never breathing again. Calling this a sad album is an understatement. A Crow Looked at Me, the latest Mount Eerie album. They led an intimate life full of creative production. In 2015, they had a daughter. Not long after, Ms. Castrée learned she had inoperable pancreatic cancer, and last July, Ms. Castrée died, at 35. He began recording these songs when the wounds were still gaping. Its August 12th, 2016Youve been dead for one month and three days, he sings on Ravens. Occasionally he reaches for air, only to realize how suffocating real life is. On My Chasm, he comes to understand how his pain is the reagent in all conversations: Do the people around me want to keep hearing about my dead wifeOr does the room go silent when I mention you . GOD DAMN. This is hands down the saddest record I've ever heard. It makes Touche Amore's Stage Four sound like a sunny day at the beach. There are no metaphors on this album. Just pure, direct, unadulterated grief. This album fucked me up. A Crow Looked at Me is the eighth album by Mount Eerie, released on March 24th, 2017 via his own label P. Elverum & Sun, Ltd. catalog number ELV 040. The albums deals with the death of his wife, the illustrator and musician Geneviève Castrée, at the age of 35 due to inoperable pancreatic cancer. Phil himself wrote a note about the album: August 31st to Dec. 6th, 2016 in the same room where Geneviève died, using mostly her instruments, her guitar, her bass, her pick, her amp, her old family accordion, writing the words on her paper, looking out the same window. By F. Dawdy Performed by E. Unrau, A. Baerg, J. Schroeder, W. Voth When Jesus alone was standing, By all His friends forgot, And Peter, near by, Crow Looked At Me 11xFile, MP3, Album, 320. ELV040. But I can say that at that concert Phil played a few new tracks, and they were even better and more moving, while being a bit more optimistic in tone, and if he's going to make a new album out of these, it's going to be even better than this.
