In Torment in Hell is the sixth studio album by American death metal band Deicide. It was released on September 25, 2001, on Roadrunner Records. The album received strong criticism from the metal underground for what many critics view as rushed production and lackluster songwriting. The label pressured the band for a quick follow-up to Insineratehymn, but Deicide failed to meet the deadline of its original release date of July 31. Things get off to a pretty nice start as the title track to Deicide's seventh and final Roadrunner release, In Torment, in Hell, breaks out of its mid-tempo grind and into some traditional, inspired death metal double bass riffing. Bandleader Glen Benton bass and vocals certainly rates as high as usual on the cookie-monster vocal scale and guitarists Brian and Eric Hoffman are typically tight and large sounding. In Torment In Hell is perhaps closer to the band's roots than as Insiniteratehymn, but where that album still had the capacity to bust out a half-decent guitar pattern, these are treacherously forgotten within seconds of their passing. Your typical mix of grooving chugs over double bass and explosive old school speed picking that in no way comes off effectively malevolent or even muscular arguably the band's one strength on their better works. The vocals might occasionally resonate along with Benton's finer performances, but their meter comes off wholly generic and derivative. IN TORMENT IN HELL is DEICIDE's 6th album. It's a fitting title. The band was not happy with their record label at the time, and we've been told the album was rushed, then pushed out to end the contractual obligations. I like to think that this unhappiness, or even anger, along with the quick pace of it's recording, made this album the dark, bitter pill it became. The one glaring problem for me that brought it down a notch, was the brief mid section of Vengeance Will Be Mine where this guy sounds like he's getting hit. It really made me cringe every time I.
