Hole in the Earth is a song by the American alternative metal band Deftones. The song was released as the first single from their fifth album, Saturday Night Wrist, and appeared as the album's opening track. Hole in the Earth was released to radio airplay on September 12, 2006. It charted relatively well, peaking at No. 18 and No. 19 in Billboard's Alternative Songs and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, respectively, and in 69th position in the UK Singles Chart. Deftones is an American alternative metal band from Sacramento, California, formed in 1988, consisting of Chino Moreno lead vocals and guitar, Stephen Carpenter guitar, Sergio Vega bass, Frank Delgado keyboards and turntables, and Abe Cunningham drums and percussion. Vega formerly of Quicksand took on bass duties in mid-2009 in substitution for Chi Cheng, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident in Santa Clara, California on November 4, 2008. Hole in the Earth was Moreno's way of addressing that challenges he and his bandmates faced to make the record. Chino says he didn't explain his lyrics to the band until after the album was recorded. This was the first single released from Saturday Night Wrist. The album title is a reference to a medical condition one of Moreno's friends suffered called Saturday Night Palsy, which is caused by sleeping with your arm over a chair or with someone lying on it - typically the person has passed out drunk when this happens. A notable victim of this condition is Dave Mustai. Hole in the Earth was written as the result of the lead singer, Chino Moreno, being frustrated and stressed over the recording process of the album, Saturday Night Wrist especially when it came to the direction hence the lines, I hate all of my friends.
