Album

The Coldest Season was recorded using old analog equipment. The album is very atmospheric with ambient and techno influences. It was named the 49th best album of the decade by Resident Advisor. Even if you're familiar with the Modern Love label, this leans more towards ambient than their typical releases. I feel the most similar album would be the beautiful album by Yagya, Rhythm of Snow. In fact, the titles and artwork hint at that type of audio similarity. In another real sense, this album is unlike any other that I've ever heard. The Coldest Season compiles and fuses the eight tracks from a four-part 12 series released during mid-2007 on England's Modern Love label, adding one beat-lessbass-less piece to help assemble a steadily flowing, discreetly stimulating, 80-minute whole. This is breathing ambient dub techno, just as exemplary of the form as anything made by Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald Basic Channel, Andy Mellwig and Thomas Köner Porter Ricks, René Löwe Vainqueur, and Stefan Betke Pole. Modern Love. Deep chord's developments of the Basic Channel sound in full-length album mode work surprisingly well, his whispy dubbed out abstractions lack colour but there is a strange depth to them which makes them very listenable, great for headphone listening as they evoke an almost Synaesthesic reaction as the sounds trail out over long constantly phasing tracks. Stunning suprise just wouldn't be enough to describe this 12" its everything i didn't expect from a deepchord / echospace related project. "Abraxas" is a tune which demonstrates their love for that deep drifting sound of Detroit & Berlin but with a really unique take on the sound which leaves you far in the artic regions. There is something in the atmosphere of these recordings, a certain subtle element no one is capable of replicating, it's truly a sound echospace have created. "The Coldest Season" is a perfect title for such a body of work, i couldn't think of a better way to describe the feeling the tracks give you. The flip side "Empyrean" is hands down the dopest thing i've ever heard from these guys, a touch of reggae and an organ that just kills me everytime i hear it. This release will probably take a while to catch on, imho, it's 10 years ahead of anything related to dub or techno. Unique just wouldn't say enough, this is the stuff of legend, I'm sure even the likes of Rhythm & Sound would agree. Couldn't recommend this record more, a must have for any fan of the dub tech sound, the deepest sh$# on earth!

Now this is a DUB record, I would have never expected this to come out on modern love or anything related to deepchord as it's a world apart from most their work but this has all the magic I would expect from an artist like Lee Perry or King Tubby (in an instrumental dub) Massive tunes for the blunted, rocker rhythm's and the sweetest skank's i've heard in ages, respect! Not this is dub music! Ace
