David Friesen, Jeff Gardner. CD - Khaeon 200203. Overview . Grace is a good duo session pairing bassist David Friesen with pianist Jeff Gardner. It's comparable to Friesen's 1999 outing with Denny Zeitlin. Friesen contributes only two originals: the title track and Change of Heart, the latter featuring an extended bass solo. Most of the writing falls to Gardner, whose six tunes range from mid-tempo blues Blues for Hawk to minor-key bossa Achados E Perdidos to gospelpop inflection Dad's Dream. Gardner also takes an unaccompanied turn with Preludio Para Rita. 1 Esquecendo 8:07 2 Blues for Hawk 7:27 3 Grace 5:14 4 All the Things You Are 5:01 5 Change of Heart 9:32 6 Preludio Para Rita 3:16 7 Achados E Perdidos 8:55 8 Dad's Dream 10:11 9 Mr. Vertigo 5:45 10 My Funny Valentine 5:06. Electric Upright Bass David Friesen Piano Jeff Gardner. About this release. Khaeon KWM200203 US. Thanks to snobb for the addition. Jeff Gardner plays piano and David Friesen a futuristic instrument called a Hemage Bass. Don't worry, it sounds like a normal double bass, whether its lightness of touch is due to technical properties or Friesen's complete mastery of the thing, I can't confirm. Given the over-all prowess of the playing, I do suspect the latter to be the case. Grace has been added to your Cart. Buy Now. This is the first pianobass duo jazz recording by bassist David Friesen & pianist Jeff Gardner, and the duo shines through the sheer inventiveness & virtuosity of the playing in a wide range of orignal compositions. High points include the elegant, Latin-flavored opening track Esquencendo, the spectacular opening bass solo on Change Of Heart, and the understated swing of the jazz standard All The Things You Are. David plays a rare Hemage electric upright bass, hand-built by H. Erlacher in Austria. Track Listings. Disc: 1. Blues For. New York pianist Jeff Gardner joins forces with bassmeister David Friesen playing his novel Hermage Bass. Friesen ends up the true star here as he has received a good deal of press recently. This is a beautiful and glistening recording. Both musicians make excellent use of the close, intimate quarters provided by the jazz duet. By its very nature the music produced is thoughtful and reflective, amply demonstrating both men's considerable talent. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. A Jazzy Christmas.
