The Berlin Trilogy consists of three consecutively released studio albums by English singer and songwriter David Bowie: Low 1977, Heroes 1977 and Lodger 1979. The albums were recorded after Bowie took up residence in West Berlin in late 1976, and saw him experiment with elements of electronic, krautrock, ambient, and world music in collaboration with American producer Tony Visconti and English musician Brian Eno. Though Lodger was considered the final LP in David Bowies Berlin trilogy, recording for it actually began in Montreux, Switzerland, and was completed in New York. Replacing Robert Fripp for this outing was Adrian Belew, poached by Bowie in Berlin when the young guitarist came through town with Frank Zappas band. Quite a guitar player you have here, Frank, Bowie said, according to Belew, when Zappa discovered them dining together. Fuck you, Captain Tom, Zappa responded. Belews spiky, free-range playing helped define the record. By 1976, David Bowie s life in Los Angeles was in free fall. Though Fame and Golden Years were Top 10 hits the year before, Bowie was lost in a haze of cocaine addiction. To escape the drug scene in L. Bowie and wife Angela headed for Europe after stops in Switzerland and France, Bowie settled in Berlin, a city then still divided by the Berlin Wall. The next three years would be one of Bowies most productive periods, as he recorded a trio of albums that became known as his Berlin Trilogy. Bowie was joined in Berlin by Iggy Pop , who was battling his own issues with heroin. Bowie would produce Iggys solo albums The Idiot and Lust for Life in 1977. Part of his Berlin period, Bowie temporarily resided in Germany to partly recover and recuperate from his hedonistic lifestyle and partly to escape his family and business pressures. David wanted to shuffle the deck, said producer of Heroes, Tony Visconti. His life was changing by the release of his previous album, Low. He had divorced his wife and the relationship with his manager was ending and his funds were at a low point. The move to Berlin was almost out of necessity.
