She became a local musical sensation in Sheridan, Wyoming, releasing two following LPs afterward. Williamson graduated from the University of Denver. The Changer and the Changed was to women's music what Michael Jackson's Thriller was to the music industry in general in the mid-'80s, an album that sold far beyond the perceived size of the market, more than 100,000 copies in its first year of release. Cris Williamson was integral to the founding of Olivia Records in 1973 by radical lesbian feminist activists associated with the Furies Collective and Radicalesbians. She encouraged them to use an independent music label as an economic base for lesbian social and political organizing. Williamson, along with Meg Christian, would go on to be Olivias best-selling artist. Her song If It Werent For The Music was on the first 45rpm record produced by the label, and they produced more than a dozen of her albums before the label disbanded in 1993. The simple but rich arrangements set Williamson's glorious voice and piano against strings, flute, and Jacqueline Robbins' jazz-inflected fretless bass, giving the album a timeless sound and putting the focus entirely on the songs and Williamson's elegantly passionate performance of them.
