The Comforts of Madness is the debut studio album by British alternative rock band Pale Saints, released through 4AD on 12 February 1990. It peaked at number 40 on the UK Albums Chart. In January 2020, 4AD released a remastered and expanded reissue of the album in honor of its 30th anniversary. NME named The Comforts of Madness the 45th best album of 1990. A thixotropic fluid is a fluid which takes a finite time to attain equilibrium viscosity when introduced to a steep change in shear rate. Some thixotropic fluids return to a gel state almost instantly, such as ketchup, and are called pseudoplastic fluids. Others such as yogurt take much longer and can become nearly solid. Some fluids are anti-thixotropic: constant shear stress for a time causes an increase in viscosity or even solidification. Fluids which exhibit this property are sometimes called rheopectic. Anti-thixotropic fluids are less well documented than thixotropic fluids. What this reissue makes clear is how much of Madness iridescent sound is the work of producers Gil Norton and John Fryer. Those earlier recordings are much rawer and more direct, while revealing the strength of the bare-bones material. Its a wonder anyone involved with Pale Saints could keep him still long enough to record Madness. Watching and listening as Masters has spun off in as many different directions as he has only makes this album feel even more special a brilliant, vivid snapshot of an artist and a band at the very beginning of a fascinating and unpredictable journey.
