The World I Know is a song by American band Collective Soul, originally released on their 1995 eponymous album. Written by lead singer and guitarist Ed Roland and guitarist Ross Childress, The World I Know peaked at number 19 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart when released as a single and spent four weeks at the number-one spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Collective Soul is a rock band which formed in Stockbridge, Georgia, United States in 1992. The band currently consists of Ed Roland vocals, guitar, Dean Roland of Magnets & Ghosts guitar, Jesse Triplett lead guitar, Will Turpin bass and Johnny Rabb drums. The 1995 eponymous album Collective Soul is not to be confused with their 2009 album, which is also self-titled. However, the second one is unofficially nicknamed Rabbit. Thanks to airplay on rock radio, this became the third 1 for Collective Soul on the Billboard Album Rock chart, following Shine and December. The song also crossed over to pop and adult contemporary playlists, pushing album sales to over 3 million in America. In 2008, David Cook performed this song on the last day of competition on Season 7 of American Idol, where he faced off against Davi.
