Journeyman's Wager winds through typical country song subject matter, from the Johnny Paycheck sentiments of the blue-collar anthem I Wish It Was Friday to the lovelorn ballad Albuquerque. But thanks to Mead's skilled songwriting, these songs sound sharp: retro without being tired, traditional without sacrificing innovation. Ten of the songs on Journeyman's Wager were written or co-written by Mead. The album's only cover is a surprising one: George Harrison's Old Brown Shoe, which Mead transforms into a rockabilly-influenced romp, co. Chuck Mead Journeymans Wager. By Rick Allen. The BR549 co-founders new disc is loaded with great stuff, including his guitar work. In the band, Mead split lead duties with Chris Scruggs and Gary Bennett, but was more than capable of handling the job on his own. After Bennett left, he did, and Don Herron picked up the slack, though his main ax was pedal steel. Here, guitarists Kenny Vaughan and Audley Freed get lead guitar where applicable, while Pat Sievers fills the chair on Journeymans Blues. Mead makes this very good album better by coming off comfortable, practiced, and happy
