According to Grove's Dictionary, the symphony reveals an extraordinarily accomplished talent for a 17-year-old student, in melodic invention, thematic handling and orchestration. Bizet started work on the symphony on 29 October 1855, four days after turning 17, and finished it roughly a month later. It was written while he was studying at the Paris Conservatoire under the composer Charles Gounod, and was evidently a student. Though Bizet's Symphony in C major 1855 today enjoys regular performances, the mature composer regarded the work as a youthful indiscretion and suppressed it. Indeed, the symphony remained unperformed until 1935, two years after it turned up in a bundle of manuscripts donated to the Paris Conservatory by composer Reynaldo Hahn. Bizet, whose reputation rests on a mere handful of works, always attached greater importance to his later Symphony in C major 1871, subtitled Roma. Nonetheless, the decidely less inspired Roma remains eclipsed in the shadow of its ebulli. Ironically, Gounods First Symphony was so well received in its 1855 premiere that he quickly composed his Second Symphony, this time somewhat lengthier than its immediate predecessor with slightly enhanced orchestral forces and in the key of E Flat Major, possibly influenced by both Mozarts 39th and Beethovens Eroica which are in that key Schuberts early symphonies also.
