Through quieter and more subdued ambient fields, he weaves an almost uncharacteristically gritty and unabashed rhythmic journey drawing from his life and history within early-90s deep house, deep techno, and chill-out music, resulting in possibly his most clear narrative to date, telling a story of beauty, sacrifice, defiance, and love. Bvdub has never been afraid to let his tracks wander, and on RESISTANCE IS BEAUTIFUL, each of these 10+ minute tracks cover lots of ground. The initial layers of "What Happened to Us" (complete with an Indian vocal sample) eventually give themselves over to an near-industrial beat, while the near folksiness of the guitar that kicks off "Nothing Like You" continues in the background as ethnic chanting -- one of Van Wey's favorite musical tropes -- echoes above it. "Gone Tomorrow" goes into downtempo territory, while "This Is Why You'll Never Win" brings in lower bass tones and eventually a house beat. "Fall" ends the album with some light breaks over sped-up vocals bent into ethereal shapes. I'm not sure what Van Wey is trying to resist, but it does end up beautiful anyway.

It is fair to say that 2011 has been a prolific year even by Brock's usual standards. I have seen the odd descenting voice complaining that Bvdub albums were becoming too formulaic or even boring and maybe that carried some truth. Resistance is beautiful answers those criticisms in fine style. We are still talking about an ambient album and one which is unmistakably Bvdub but here there is a big influence from club culture, where Brock's roots lie.

Beats feature more prominently than on his other albums, where they are sometimes entirely absent. Gone Tomorrow has a smoky trip-hop feel. On This why you'll never win a hissing dub-techno undertone is overlayered with a swirling vocal refrain before the track builds into a pumping and bass heavy finale as the vocals beome more euphoric and hypnotic. On the closing track clipped beats and hi-hats compliment orchestral and disorientating ambience.

Bvdub albums have a unique sound and any artist that has developed such a personal and singular musical personality deserves respect. This along with the beautiful and timeless Tribes at the Temple Silence rank amongst the best albums of 2011.

What a sound. I thought I go listen to it, but it looks more like crying with it. This CD touches my heart. Number 5 is the track I really "fall" in love with. In the end there is such a really nice climax with all those echoing female voices over and over again.
This release is more than good. The rhtythms and the beautifull thin female voices (especially track 4 and 5) together with the harmonic sounds makes this one of my favorite albums of Bvdub.
