Broadcast recording, engineering, mixing. The '60s meet the distant future on the bewitching debut album from these Stereolab protégés. While their analogue electronics and quavering sound effects suggest the avant-garde output of Delia Derbyshire and The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, their songwriting evokes classic Brill Building pop. The result is an unusually gentle take on psychedelia, where medieval madrigals meet Mellotron Echo's Answer, and harpsichords punctuate vintage synthesisers Come On Let's Go . Trish Keenan's flawless vocals provide the irresistible through line-and a cool, calming. After being mired in the studio for nearly three years, Broadcast returned with their first proper full-length album, The Noise Made by People, a collection of more shimmering, weightless pop that is nostalgic for yesterday's visions of the future but remains on the cutting edge of contemporary music. Where their early singles collected on 1997's Work and Non-Work painted small, quaint portraits of their retro-futurism, The Noise Made by People delivers their sound in widescreen, filmic grandeur. Broadcast one-ups the avant leanings of most of these juxtaposition-experimenting acts by making these advances work in the context of memorable pop songs. Special praise must be given to the band for the sonic imprint here. But for all the sound and song, Broadcast's vision seems relatively narrow, and several ideas are spread a bit too thinly across the album's length. The band obviously have the talent and the means. There are some really great albums in the world, but the ones that require a specific setting are, to me, the most special. musicmagpie55. I like the play with electronic production, but this did not grip me as much as I would have liked. The singles are great, 'Unchanging Window' is entertaining. I do find the placid vocals a little taxing after a while. Released March 20, 2000. The Noise Made by People Tracklist. Long Was the Year in album Broadcast - The Noise Made By People 2000.
