The autumn chambermusic festival there in 1977 featured a particularly starstudded assemblage and a threerecord set from Columbia gives some tantalizing excerpts from the live performances devoted to music by Schubert and Britten. And what a lineup it is. Sviatoslav Richter plays several short Schubert piano pieces, Hermann Prey sings five songs from Winterreise, Janet Baker offers five additional and seldomheard Schubert songs, the Amadeus Quartet with Clifford Curzon play the composer's chamber music, Elly Ameling and Peter Pears join voices in two duets and Julian Bream performs. The Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts is an English arts festival devoted mainly to classical music. It takes place each June in the Aldeburgh area of Suffolk, centred on Snape Maltings Concert Hall. The Festival was founded in 1948 by the composer Benjamin Britten, the singer Peter Pears and the librettistproducer Eric Crozier. Their work with the English Opera Group which they had founded with designer John Piper in 1947 frequently took them away from home, and it was while they were on.
