Tenor Ian Bostridge brings together three of Britten's most important song cycles: Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, Les Illuminations, and Nocturne. His performances are notable for their dramatic range, particularly the power and passion and vocal abandon he brings to these works. In Serenade, there is a thrilling wildness to Nocturne that one does not usually associate with this music, his Dirge is a harrowing beacon of doom, and his performance of Nocturne's But that night when on my bed I lay, is crazed, almost demented sounding. At the opposite end of the spectrum, his Sonnet is sung with languid and woozy simplicity. Ian BostridgeRadek BaborákBerliner PhilharmonikerSir Simon Rattle. Star tenor Ian Bostridge collaborates with Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic in three of Benjamin Britten's major voice and orchestra works, producing magic. The 2004 performance is both musical and spectacular. Note that I am not a Britten fan - I think he is a highly uneven composer - but two of the three works presented here are captivating and show him at the height of inspiration. 0 out of 5 stars Britten: Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings Les Illuminations. The Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Op. 31, is a song cycle written in 1943 by English composer Benjamin Britten for tenor accompanied by a solo horn and a small string orchestra. Composed during World War II at the request of the horn player Dennis Brain, it is a setting of a selection of six poems by British poets on the subject of night, including both its calm and its sinister aspects.
