British keyboard maestro Brian Auger achieved something virtually unheard of with this classic album upon its 1973 release. Closer To It, Brian's heady mix of jazz, soul, funk and rock entered the US Billboard Jazz, R 'n' B and Rock charts simultaneously He had done such a great job blending and blurring musical boundaries. All in all, this version of Oblivion Express may be my favorite. Though Auger shows signs of mellowing and his most explosive organ solos show up on his earlier LPs, I've always enjoyed the excitement that percussion adds to jazz rockfusion and it certainly sets this album apart from his others. In terms of consistency, Closer to It and the band's self-titled debut are arguably the highest quality recordings Brian ever made. Although a rather short album, Closer To It can be considered Brian's Closest To IT, because of the infinitely positive vibes exuding from this album. We can all listen to this remarkable album and wonder what it might have been like if Alex Ligertwood had sung on it. Or how it would have been less dated if Brian had resisted the urge to use a synth or two. But then, we can rejoice in the musicianship, the fabulous arrangements, the funky material, and the reality that Brian is a tolerable singer. One of the better early funk jazz fusion albums, Closer To It's plentiful qualities very quickly distract from its few shortcomings. Brian had been forging this very single minded path for nearly ten years previously in various groups The Steampacket and then The Trinity with Julie Driscoll his avowed aim to overlay funk, pop and soul rhythms with jazz harmony and solos.
