Boyd Albert Raeburn October 27, 1913 August 2, 1966 was an American jazz bandleader and bass saxophonist. His big band, which was active ca. 1944-1947, performed arrangements that were often quite avant-garde, like the arrangements of Stan Kenton during the same period. The compositions arranged by George Handy were the most contemporary, utilizing dissonance somewhat in the manner of Igor Stravinsky. He attended the University of Chicago, where he led a campus band but eventually left the music. Innovations By Boyd Raeburn is a big band music album recording by BOYD RAEBURN released in 1951 on CD, LPVinyl andor cassette. The One and Only: Boyd Raeburn - Boyd Raeburn. Memphis In June - Boyd Raeburn, Boyd Raeburn & His Orchestra. Albert Boyd Raeburn October 27, 1913 August 2, 1966 was an American jazz bandleader and bass saxophonist. Boyd Raeburn was born in Faith, South Dakota, and became one of the greatest and least-known of jazz bandleaders during the 1940s. To modern ears his music sounds completely acceptable, not much more difficult to comprehend than the music of such better known leaders as Stan Kenton or Dizzy Gillespie, but without the support of a major record label or radio sponsor his band floundered for years, often going bankrupt only to reappear a few months later with new personnel.
