As a friend of ours put it, when Botch took the stage, not only were they unquestionably the greatest band of the night regardless of who else was playing, but for that 45 minutes they were the fucking greatest band on earth. The first time I saw Botch was a mind bending experience - though afterwards they claimed their set was terrible. I thought to myself if this was an off night Id hate to be the bands playing with them on a good day. A good day for Botch consisted of utterly laying to waste everything in their path and having a grand ol time while doing so. This is my second favorite botch record. It is almost better than we are the romans, but that record will always have a special place in my Anthology of Dead Ends is an Extended play by Botch, released on Hydra Head Records in October 2002. It was the band's final studio recording, and was released after they disbanded. The album was released on 10 vinyl and CD a 12 version was eventually released. It was released in a digipak case as well as a standard jewel case. Botch released two fantastic metalcore albums in 1999 and 2000 entitled American Nervoso and We Are the Romans , respectively. Both albums pushed mathematical metal to a wider audience, crafting dense walls of sound with off-kilter rhythms and snarling vocals in a more accessible manner than their Hydra Head counterparts. Picking up my copy of An Anthology of a Dead End , my attention was immediately drawn to the track titles: Spaim, Japam, Framce, Vietmam, Afghamistam, and Micaragua- the kind of nursery school cipher that might have come from a book on combinations and permutations authored by Richard Scarry. Where alot of bands kept topping their works each time, At the drive-in, Refused, Botch, although following the same path, had TWO records that changed everything. Botch were also a band who always wanted to come up with creative song titles. Previous albums saw them make songs like John Woo and Saint Mathew Returns to the Womb. But this time, the idea was to make one word titles which still fit the obscure sound of Botch. The result, six tracks taking the names of countries and replacing the Ms with Ns.
