Bob Seger closed out his Capitol contract with Brand New Morning, a singersongwriter album quite unlike anything he had yet released. Following its release he moved to the Detroit-based label Palladium and returned to hard-driving rock & roll with Smokin' O. s, the polar opposite of Brand New Morning. According to legend, the title stands for smoking other people's songs, which makes sense since this is a cover album that even covers Bob Seger & the Last Heard. As a locally successful Detroit-area artist, he performed and recorded as Bob Seger and the Last Heard and Bob Seger System throughout the 1960s. By the early 1970s, he had dropped the 'System' from his recordings and continued to strive for broader success with various other bands. Bob Seger Heavy music Album Smokin O P s 2:29. Bo Diddley Seger's Smokin' O. s, released in 1972, is one such album. Bob Seger is best known for his work with the Silver Bullet Band. While the Silver Bullet Band material was really good, it was produced in fairly slick and polished formula that took away much of raw energy that blasted out of Bob Seger's earlier recordings, like Smokin' O. This album is mostly covers of other artists' material but most of it is great stuff. If you like this album, keep an eye out for another Bob Seger album from 1972 called, appropriately enough, Back In 72. It doesn't seem to be available on CD but if you see a decent vinyl copy in a 2nd hand record store, grab it. LP, PalladiumReprise Records, P-1006 1972. Transcription and annotations by Lester Bangs Archive management. BOB SEGER. But Bob Seger was just beginning. Following a signing with Capitol Records, he made four albums for that label in the late Sixties, one of which, Mongrel, was his most complete, unified and sustained work to that date, and became a kind of underground classic. During the past two years Bob Seger has continued to grow, and to marshall his incredible, seemingly endless energies. He has played all over the United States and in seemingly every town and club and ballroom in Michigan
