Time Out of Mind is the 30th studio album by American musician Bob Dylan, released on September 30, 1997, through Columbia Records. It was released as a single CD as well as a double studio album on vinyl, his first since Self Portrait in 1970. For many fans and critics, the album marked Dylan's artistic comeback after he appeared to struggle with his musical identity throughout the 1980s he had not released any original material for seven years, since Under the Red Sky in 1990. Not long after attending the California funeral of his friend Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan found himself snowbound at his Minnesota farm. Those songs turned the cold environment into a crystalline lens on the tiring world-a place that was not dark yet, but getting there, where the blues wrapped around my head. What Dylan had left to say or whether he had any enthusiasm left for saying it had, for a while, been unclear. After spending much of the '90s touring and simply not writing songs, Bob Dylan returned in 1997 with Time Out of Mind, his first collection of new material in seven years. Where Under the Red Sky, his last collection of original compositions, had a casual, tossed-off feel, Time Out of Mind is carefully considered, from the densely detailed songs to the dark, atmospheric production.
