It was four years between the release of Bo's last album of all-new cuts, 500 More Man, and this album, during which time he'd spent time recording with Chess' top bluesmen, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Recorded and released in 1970, The Black Gladiator was Bo Diddleys first album of all new material since 1965s 500 More Man. In the intervening half-decade the music scene had been through some pretty radical changes, and the astute and forward-thinking Diddley wasnt about to be left behind. Black Gladiator is a great compilation of dynamic music from Bo's later work. The beats in several cuts, most notably I Don't Like You, The Funky Fly and I've Got a Feeling are among the best he ever created. I Don't Like You, which could be considered a proto-rap cut, as it dishes out the dozens to a rhythm that takes you straight back to the jungle, is a more than worthy follow-up to the iconic Say, Man. The album represents Bo Diddley's first flirtation with a hard edged funky-soul sound but with his own unmistakeable and unsurpassable trade-marks, riding alongside.
