Cello: the 'Marquis de Corberon' Stradivarius of 1726, on kind loan to Steven Isserlis by the Royal Academy of Music, London; it was formerly owned by the great cellist Zara Nelsova - who recorded Bloch' s Schelomo with the composer conducting on it.
Stephen Hough's quietly yearning The Loneliest Wildnerness, inspired by Herbert Read's war poem, is recent 2005, while Bloch's Schelomo, Hebrew Rhapsody 1916 was written in the midst of the first world war. As Bloch later observed, he was saturated with the misery of the world when he wrote it. Some ridiculed it as suitable only for a Hollywood epic but Isserlis conveys its simple, urgent message. The program opens with Ernest Bloch's popular Schelomo 1916: not a work about war but a wartime work that pushed the composer deeper into his own Jewish heritage. The work has been accused of being excessively cinematic, but, as Isserlis points out in his excellent notes, the influence went the other way: a generation of film composers used Bloch's cello representation of King Solomon as an example in tying music to the subjectivity of individual characters. It doesnt matter that Steven Isserlis has recorded Blochs Schlemo and Bridges Oration before these new performances are utterly compelling and deserve the widest possible audience. The Bloch is a favourite with cellists and listeners alike and its ardent romanticism and celebration of Jewish culture has a fervent advocate in Isserlis. Bridges Oration is a superbly crafted work that should be better known. Isserlis evokes the drama and futility of war with an amazing range of tone colour. Noting that Bloch a Jew and Bridge a pacifist responded to human suffering in different ways, Isserlis offers his own imagined program for each work. Album Summary. Bloch, Ernest : Schelomo. MusicWeb International, 31st July 2013 Bloch's famous Schelomo is given a superb performance, with Isserlis on inspired form. This is music that can seem overblown in the wrong hands, but here everything goes is an outstanding disc of glorious music, superbly played and recorded. Ernest Bloch Frank Bridge Stephen Hough. Bloch, who had originally intended to use the text itself in the work changed his mind after an encounter with the Russian cellist Alexander Barjansky. Naming it after King Salomo, traditionally regarded as the author of Ecclesiastes, Bloch created what has become one of the most frequently performed works for cello and orchestra from the 20th century. Less well-known, but no less deeply felt, is Oration, composed in 1930 by Frank Bridge, whose early works had been in a traditional vein with influences from Fauré and Brahms.
