Absolute banger album with an incredible bass that will take you to another dimension. Love this work of BSE, these guys totally rock the Drum & Bass for their distinct and inimitable flavours, Black Sun Empire have further refined the formulae that formed their astonishing full-length debut Driving Insane to produce Cruel & Unusual which resets the standard slightly higher. Out of the three strictly BSE bits, The Cooler begins with a robotic beatbox that builds from hip into a hypnotic break, whereas Bitemark coincidentally leaves the best impression. While the Dance4life remix on the sampler rolls right out, this one refuses to play it straight, instead raging and roiling around post-drop. Balanced and polished to near perfection, Cruel & Unusual takes aim at both ends of the body with acute accuracy, ensuring a sharp strike-rate. Another classic album from the gentlemen that form Black Sun Empire. The whole album is of the usual excellent quality, with the only slightly dodgy tracks being 'The Cooler' and 'Dance 4 Life Remix 2' get the 1st remix on the LP sampler, it's much better. Bitemark, Masquerade, Hideous and Future Frame are the stand-out tracks, for me. They all manage to sound different, but retain the technoeybassy vibe that BSE do so well.
