An early version of the song is attributed to Pinetop Sparks and his brother Milton. It was first performed in the taverns of St. Louis by the Sparks brothers and was recorded July 28, 1935 by Pinetop with Henry Townsend on guitar. Do you know any background info about this album Start the wiki. Billy Stewart began singing publicly with his mother's group, the Stewart Gospel Singers, as a teenager. He made the transition to secular music by filling in occasionally for the Rainbows, a D. area vocal group led by future soul star Don Covay. It was also through the Rainbows that Stewart met another aspiring singer, a very young Marvin Gaye. Billy Stewart's direct, easy croon and high-pitched harmonies predated the Philly soul explosion of the 1970s. Songs like I Do Love You and Sitting in the Park, both from 1965, are some of the finest examples of smooth soul. Stewart's vocal style was expressive and would often offer up bits of the scat style he knew from his early jazz-oriented days. Excellent stuff. Jon Pruett. About This Album. I Do Love You.
