Bilders or Builders is a New Zealand music group of varying lineups that produced a string of self-recorded 7-inch vinyl releases between 1980 and 1982 leading to Beatin Hearts, the first studio-album from fledgling New Zealand independent record label 'Flying Nun Records'. Known variously from pre-internet times as Die Bilder German, for The Pictures, Bilderbergers, Soluble Fish, and High Thirties Piano, their alternative band names reflected a playfulness that challenged priority branding. Several 7 singles and EPs led to the album Beaten Hearts with Campbell McLay b and Malcolm Grant dr and Chris Knox and Mikie Dooley guesting, recorded August 1982, released commercially January 1983. Bill Direen forms South Indies Records the following year to archive post-punk independent music. Also known as Builders, Die Bilder german, for The Pictures or Bilderbergers, their alternative band names reflect a playfulness that predates the internet and its requirement for specificity of brand. They have been recently brought out of obscurity by labels Unwucht Germany Grapefruit USA, Sil. Six Impossible Things, Solomans Ball, Die Bilder, Bilderine, Bilder Bergers and the Builders, they all had one thing in common Bill Direen. The Christchurch musician and songwriter's art and sound was at the core of one of the most sustained bodies of quality New Zealand indie music in the early to mid-1980s. Early recording attempts failed to satisfy, but by 1980, Direen released the four song 7-inch EP Six Impossible Things through Wellingtons Sausage Records. Back home in Christchurch, he used the same format for the self-released Solomans Ball, Schwimmen In Der See on Flying Nun Records, High Thirties Piano and Feast Of Frogs in 1981, 1982 and 1983.
