Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber is an orchestral work written by German composer Paul Hindemith in America in 1943. The idea of composing a work based on Carl Maria von Weber's music was first put to Hindemith in 1940 by the choreographer and dancer Léonide Massine, who suggested that he should arrange music by Weber for a ballet. When Hindemith made a piano arrangement in March 1940 of the two pieces that would become movements 1 and 3 of the Metamorphosis. General Information. Work Title. In his Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber 1943, Hindemith pays homage to the important German early Romantic composer by adapting some of his music - works for piano duo and for the stage - as an orchestral suite. It's uncertain whether Hindemith preferred the plural or singular form of the word metamophosis in the title whichever form of the word he intended, it is the key to the music. Leonard Bernstein and his New York Philharmonic Orchestra do a fine job in unlocking every morsel of flavor in a manner that is rich and warm. Read more. One person found this helpful. This is the definitive performance of the Hindemith E-flat Symphony. The Symphony in E-flat from 1940 has never achieved the popularity of the other two works, which form a triad with the Mathis der Maler symphony as the composer's most enduring orchestral legacy. But while lacking melodic inspiration, the symphony holds its own for propulsion and excitement while it's going. Hindemith composed this orchestral work as part of an abortive ballet project. It incorporates themes that Weber wrote as incidental music for Carlo Gozzis play Turandot. Hindemiths work premiered in New York in January 1944, with Artur Rodzinski conducting. The piece is divided into four movements: Allegro.
