In high school, the band leader Kurt Bachman met Scott Laird, who was studying his first year as a music instructor. Believer's debut album, Extraction From Mortality, is an awesome piece of technical thrash metal. This was for many years my favourite album, and it still brings me joy when I dig it out of the archives. Although their subsequent work is both more polished and more technical, I think Extraction From Mortality outdoes them for the sheer catchiness of the tunes. The guitar crunch is fantastic and Joey Daub's drumming is, well, just sick. The lengthy violin intro to the title track is great, and a foretaste of more classical elements to come on future albums.
