Basic Channel - E2e4 Basic Reshape. Basic Channel - Mutism. Following 13 years after BCD, BCD-2 is only Basic Channel's second CD release, and again, it revisits previously released work. The tracks included- taken from catalog numbers BC-01, 02, 05, 07 and 09- are 14 and 15 years old now, but their reissue couldn't be more timely. BCD-2 may surprise listeners who thought they knew the Basic Channel sound, however. Most of their notoriety is due to the music showcased on the original BCD, awash in steely, aquatic color and blown this way and that by colliding waves of delay, sometimes driven by a muted 44 kick but just as often propelled by a broad, feathery pulse with no distinct center. Listen free to Basic Channel BCD Q-Loop, Remake Basic Reshape and more. 11 tracks 96:59. Quadrant Dub I, 06:56. Lyot Remix, 06:28. Basic Channel - BCD-2 In its original incarnation from 1993 to 1995, Basic Channel-the Berlin-based production team and record label of Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus-was very much a label of mystery. In short, not only was the label itself a different beast, shrouding its releases in an anonymous, ever-disintegrating shell, but the music world itself was a different place then, too

This album serves as an excellent introduction to Basic Channel. I remember first hearing of BC and feeling a little confused as to what it is, or what it sounded like. Some of it's heavy and fast, some of it tempered and nautical, and every track has it's magic. The downside of this collection are typical complaints for the Best Of format, songs are edited (and I swear you have to listen to each of these traks in full to get the intended effect). The tracklisting does the best it can with the material, but it seems obvious to this listener that each BC release is intended to be listened to in it's entirety start to finish, which inevitably results in a sort of euphoric psychedelic alien locked groove that modulates like jazz does in it's aural space. Really magic stuff, but once you've listened to BCD I suggest you find the flac or vinyl of each release and learn to cherish these recordings.

I don't think i'm going out on a limb here when I say that this is THE dub techno album to own... Well in any case, if you see it fit to only own 1 dub techno CD then I would beg you to make this your choice. I'm a fan of newer artists like Deepchord/Echospace, Murmur and Quantec but lets face it, this is where it all began. These tracks are from the early to mid 90's and it doesn't even show in the sound in my opinion. We have the hidden techno beat in e2e4 Basic Reshape and then there's the lovely static of Mutism. Well actually.. Every track is is pretty hypnotic and a classic by any means. If you're new to dub techno then I can do nothing more then suggest Basic Channel's "BCD" as your starting point for the genre.
