Classical Barbra is the eighteenth studio album by Barbra Streisand, released in February 1976 but recorded in 1973. The album consists of songs by classical European composers and includes tracks sung in English, French, Occitan, German, Italian and Latin. The music is performed by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Claus Ogerman. Leonard Bernstein wrote of the album, Barbra Streisand's natural ability to make music takes her over to the classical field with extraordinary ease. It's clear. One of Barbra Streisand's more esoteric projects, Classical Barbra is an album of European art songs composed by Debussy, Handel, Schumann, and others and sung in French, German, Latin, Italian, and English. Streisand is in typically good voice, and while the album must have been a stretch for her usual audience and a surprise to the classical audience, she carries the performances off. Track Listing. A beautiful album, and one of my favourites, featuring the incredible voice of Barbra lavished on a set of classical and Neo-classical pieces. Accompanied by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Claus Ogerman, the star piece for me is a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of In Trutina from Carmona Burana. In January 2006 the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. looks at Streisand's 1976 album of classical tunes, conducted by Claus Ogerman: CLASSICAL BARBRA. Leonard Bernstein's notes: Barbra Streisand's natural ability to make music takes her over to the classical field with extraordinary ease. It's clear that she loves these songs. In her sensitive, straight-forward, and enormously appealing performance, she has given us a very special musical experience. I have several Barbra Streisand recordings and this one is my favorite. Why Because this classical album shows her range of ability as a singer. Sure, she can belt out show tunes like nobody's business, but this kind of music takes finesse, grace, and even tenderness. Barbra does all of that so well on this recording. Barbra showcases hew vocal strengths in the 10 tracks singing in different languages. These days, every two-bit MoR belter gets to make a classical album but when Barbra Streisand released Classical Barbra in 1976, it was a rare and risky gambit
