Mental Funeral saw the band continue from where they had left off with the 1990 EP Retribution In Blood whereas Autopsy had previously utilized doomy passages in their songs before, Mental Funeral sees them completely embrace that as both the dominant tempo and mood of the album. There are still faster passages here and there, invoking quite a bit of Celtic Frost influence, but even those moments absolutely drip with the vile atmosphere and feel that is part and parcel of the writing on here. Autopsy slowed down and incorporated many influences on this albums, and particularly from Trouble. Indeed, the work Autopsy put into Mental Funeral was inspired by Chicagos doom metal pioneers Trouble. However, the mix of both genres works wonders, paving a layer of extremely heavy chords underneath the overlying technicality of the solos and a handful of the riffs. The quality of the songwriting and musicianship on Mental Funeral is top-notch, and its hard to ignore just how brilliant the final product is. Despite a running time which turns out to be a tad too long, and maybe a filler track or two, the music displayed on Mental Funeral shows exactly how awesome death metal should be done. Sadly, while it won over as many fans as it pissed off upon release, Mental Funeral arguably confused an even greater number of consumers, turning Autopsy into death metal's ultimate lovehate band, the one no one seemed able to agree on - not least the bandmembers themselves, as a series of increasingly inconsistent and controversial albums that brought on a.
