Album

Amber is the second studio album by English electronic music duo Autechre, released on 7 November 1994 by Warp. It was the first Autechre album to be composed entirely of new material, as their debut album Incunabula 1993 was a compilation of older tracks. As opposed to Incunabula, which was part of Warp's Artificial Intelligence series of albums and predominantly a compilation of older material, Amber was described by Autechre member Rob Brown as genuinely the first album we put out on Warp. Amber, released by Warp Records in 1994, is the second full-length album by the electronic music group Autechre. Amber has a more ambient, less percussion-based sound than Autechre's first release Incunabula. In small but noticeable ways on this, their sophomore release, Autechre begin to break from the clean, if at times obvious, artistic techno from their debut record, and reach instead toward something far more distinct. The dense, mathematical music Autechre pioneered on their debut album Incunabula is given a new twist on their follow-up, Amber. While percussion took center stage on their previous works, highly evolved melodies and textures dominate here. The spirit of electro still lives in the muted beats, rhythmically complex and strangely funky. But they don't merely provide a background they meld seamlessly into dense layers of strings, wandering synth hooks, and massive shards of white noise. Sean Booth and Rob Brown weren't quite there yet, but their self-production is even more accomplished than before, and their instincts to steer away from overly polite electronic dance music come ever more to the fore at various points throughout Amber. Another Autechre release I bought from Cob Records and it was great to hear this album especially after seeing them live at the Leadmill with The Sabres of Paradise and LFO just one month before. This album continues on from Incunabula but with a darker tone than what they had previously released. A classic album in a year of many great releases from Warp Records. Easily one of the best electronic records of all time. Nothing sounds quite like it, though a bazillion ambient artists have tried to copy it. Straight up masterpiece.

Just thought of this record today while I cobble together another mix. Thought to add to the list of accolades. This is their best record, not even close. Incunabula is high art on its own, but this one is in the stratosphere. To think these guys came up with this stuff when they were young lads. Keep that in mind when dealing with younger people, the things they are capable of. This will stay with me and then get passed on, and as long as the PVC is cared for, should last for decades on end. Definitely in the top 25 of my vinyl collection.

A timeless classic from start to finish. The same applies to Tri Repatae and Incunabula.

Don't forget LP5, freaking beast of an album, from Acroyear to Arch Carrier!

Only saw Amber was available for pre-order at first. Crossed my fingers and came here hoping someone would point out if Incunabula was also being blessed. Tri-Repetae was a nice surprise...

What a great record. The beginning of a new chapter for electronic music. I played this record to a punkrocker and he listened carefully and he could not understand from what planet this music was came from. I told him from Planet Warp. Anyway if this one is the best autechre or not, but it is in the hall of fame of electronic music ever.

Tamesya
