Dear Friends in Japan It has been almost twenty years since The Jazz Messengers and I first visited Japan. I can clearly recall the execitement , the depth of feeling, we all felt. I hope this album brings back as many fond memories for those of you who were there as it dose for me. And, for those of you who weren't, I look forward to sharing the excitement - and the music - of that occasion. Jazz Messengers is a 1961 jazz album released by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers for Impulse Records. Expanding to a sextet for the first time, it was the group's final recording with Bobby Timmons, who would be replaced by Cedar Walton. There is only one original the rest are standards that have not been overdone. The playing is great all around and very tight, especially the solos by Morgan and Shorter. Songs on album: 1 Summit , 2 The Breeze and I, 3 Blues March, 4 Moanin', and 5 It's only a Paper Moon. the songs are pretty long, so you get some great solo time The only drawback about this recording and its companion, vol. 2 is the sound quality because it is a live recording. The live sound quality isn't deplorable, but there are some noticeable mic level drops at some points. other than that, this is a great listen. check out volume 2 too Read more.
