It’s been 13 years since we last saw a new album from Swedish heavy metal band Armageddon, so their return with 2015’s Captivity and Devourment took a lot of fans by surprise. Armageddon, of course, was a side project of Arch Enemy guitarist Christopher Amott. Now that he’s no longer in that band, he had time to resurrect Armageddon, this time with an entirely new lineup.

What may be even more shocking than Armageddon’s return in the first place is the fact that they’ve gone back to the melodic death metal sound of their 1997 debut Crossing the Rubicon. Gone are the melodic power metal sounds of Embrace the Mystery and Three. Captivity and Devourment is a melodic death metal album, and a really good one at that. Comparisons to Arch Enemy are inevitable, but if anything this is closer to the early Arch Enemy albums with Johann Liiva on vocals. This is a little more experimental, with the occasional clean vocal or atmospheric part thrown in, but for the most part expect a heavy, fast, melodic death metal album.

This is melodic death metal done right, and by one of the most skilled veterans of the scene. Fans of the early Armageddon sound are going to love Captivity and Devourment, as should fans of bands like Hearse, Scar Symmetry, Mercenary and of course Arch Enemy.
