Excellent album and could be one of the best prog jazz rock albums from Italy. do not buy the 1989 cd reissue. any 70s lp or later 2000 cd or lp sounds better

Arbeit Macht Frei is the debut for this Italian prog and fusion band and it is a wonderful debut album that is certain to blow you away. It's a great way to start the Cramps label too, as this was the first release on the label, and earliest pressings come with a gun insert. People always focus on Demetrio Stratos' voice, and rightfully so, forgetting he also played organ. There are other members handing keyboards too, including synths and electric piano. This was their only album to feature Jan Patrick Djivas (I seen his name spelled many different ways) before he left for PFM. These guys were openly communist, but this is a case in musical quality more than makes up for politics. Henry Cow and Robert Wyatt were also openly communist and made great music. After all, just check out the intense playing from all around. It's obvious these guys were having a blast doing this. The opening cut "Lugliom Agosto, Settembre (Nero)", for example, starts off with a recording of a lady speaking some poetry in Arabic (apparently taken from a library recording in Cairo), before you hear Demetrio singing, and then the band kicking in, with Middle Eastern motive played on synths and just fantastic playing around. "Consapevolezza" has a bit of an ELP-like feel, mainly in the organ playing. "L'abbattimento Dello Zeppelin" with the strange synth effects starting up, Demetrio giving us some funny voices, and some killer jamming. There is not one bad cut on this album. That's what I love of albums like this, not one cut you want to skip, they don't come around that often. So that's why I give this a five star rating. I really have to say that your Italian prog collection just isn't complete without this album!
